3 Steps to Work Through Overwhelm as a Coach

March 27, 2015

While spring is in the air, it’s definitely not on the ground here in Milwaukee. I woke up to a dusting of snow…and I just wanted to scream: COME ON SPRING!

When these ‘less than ideal’ moments occur, I find leaning into my positive mindset is what reawakens me to the beauty of the world.

Being more in-tune with our environments is a blessing on our journey as experienced coaches. If you’re not careful, though, environments can be suffocating. That’s where those “overwhelmed, overworked or overweight” side effects can surface.

I get asked all the time how I manage all the business and life overwhelm as a coach and still run a thriving business.

The answer…

Re-frame Overwhelm Into Outcomes

When I was health coaching, I specialized in food cravings (+ emotional eating). Part of my work with women was to re-frame their “frustrating cravings” into “celebrations”.

Why?

Simple. Food cravings are the symptom of either a physical or emotional imbalance. And unpacking where the craving was **really** coming from was the key ingredient required to move through the craving to ultimate food freedom.

The same is true for your overwhelm as an entrepreneur.

Just like food cravings, overwhelm is a gift that can be your guide forward. The key with overwhelm is to unpack it and feel the real outcome you desire…

3 F’s To Help Re-frame Overwhelm Into Outcomes In 3 Seconds Flat

1) Focus – where the overwhelm has settled in your body. Laser focus into that area of your body and ask it: What do you really want?

2) Forgive – yourself and your body for creating the overwhelming energy. Say outloud: I let this go.

3) Feel –  write down the ‘wants’ from #1 in result-based lingo (ie. outcomes you really crave) and anchor your desired outcomes with how you want to FEEL after they are completed.

By focusing on the positive feeling(s) you want to experience allows outcomes take care of themselves (while saying good-bye to overwhelm forever).

As entrepreneurs, juggling so many business needs, our nervous systems are wound up to be more susceptible to overwhelm. It’s a feeling that can leave us stuck for years in business, and ultimately – can even lead us to burnout or giving up on our businesses completely.

I don’t want that for you.

And I know you don’t want that for you.

Do the 3 F’s look too simple to work?

Yay, I get that.

But the most liberating thing I’ve learned on this coaching entrepreneurial journey is that it’s the simple things that scale.

Give it a try.
