My breakfast shake recipes

Photo of banana, strawberries, cherries and spinach next to blender.

I had a ton of interest from the teleclass last night "Get the Skinny on Healthy Fats" regarding what I have for breakfast.  I  must admit, I never used to like breakfast.  In fact, I have vivid memories being on family vacations watching everyone eat breakfast while I just sat there watching.  Crazy, right?

Well now, I must start each day with something tasty and healthy to not only give me that instant energy boost and brain lift (hmmm, is that a real phrase?  LOL!), but to also provide me with long-lasting energy throughout the morning.  And the greatest part about these shakes?  They provide you with some omega-3 fatty acids right away in the morning!  All food items are organic.

Here's what I make if I'm in a hurrry:

Lisa's Fruit and Nut Shake

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 cup filtered water
  • 1-2 Tbsp almond butter
  • 1 Tbsp ground flax seed
  • 1 Tbsp raw cacoa nibs
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1 handful spinach

Directions:

Blend, blend, blend!  I use the magic bullet and this all fits nicely in one cup.

Variations:

You can substitute any type of fresh or frozen fruit - just make sure it's organic!  You can also substitute other nut butters (peanut, pecan, macadamia).  Just have fun with it and enjoy your burst of energy!

If I have a few extra minutes (this really does not take that long to make) here's my power drink based on a recipe I got from Karen Urbanek out at Nature's Garden Health Center:

Lisa's Power Shake

  • 2 leaves kale
  • 2 Tbsp fresh parsley
  • Handful spinach
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 cup pineapple (about 7 chunks)
  • 1 avocado
  • 2.5 cups filtered water
  • 1 stalk celery
  • Chunk of cabbage (about 2 iinch square)
  • 2 Tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 2 teaspoons Livin Green (superfood blend at Nature's Garden Health Center)

Directions:

Blend in a powerfull blender!  This makes around one quart and I drink it all morning.

Variations:

Use fresh or frozen fruit. Substitute 1-2 bananas for any of the fruit I have listed (including the avocado).  I cannot eat bananas so I use an avocado to cream up the shake a bit.  Do not use dried parsley if you cannot find fresh.  Feel free to add any other combination of greens or fresh herbs, but I would not recommend broccoli!  If you don't have the Livin Greens superfood blend, no worries!

So there are my two favorite breakfast shakes!  What do you think?  Please comment, especially if you try them!

Tried the Fruit and Nut shake and it was great! We bought unsalted almond butter so next time I will add some salt. Love getting some veggies first thing in the morning. Thanks for the recipe!

Hi David!  Thanks so much for all your enthusiasm :)  I am so happy to hear you love the shakes just as much as I do.  Let me know if you need anymore recipes!

So I just got to try the power shake and that thing was awesome! I put a whole banana in mine and it was really delicious. Thanks for the great recipe!

Lisa,

I love the fruit and nut shake. I have not had the chance to try the power shake, but it is on my list. The fruit and nut shake is really filling and keeps me going. Thanks for these!
